{"id":240,"date":"2017-08-17T18:51:12","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T16:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.austrianresistance.org\/?p=240"},"modified":"2017-10-07T14:20:44","modified_gmt":"2017-10-07T12:20:44","slug":"fanatism-obedience-defiance-in-nazi-vienna-lower-austria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.austrianresistance.org\/?p=240","title":{"rendered":"Fanatism\u2014Obedience\u2014Defiance in Nazi Vienna &#038; Lower Austria"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>D\u00d6W Yearbook 2016<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-238 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.austrianresistance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Jahrbuch-2016-Cover-209x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.austrianresistance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Jahrbuch-2016-Cover-209x300.png 209w, https:\/\/www.austrianresistance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Jahrbuch-2016-Cover.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The yearbook consists of the D\u00d6W <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doew.at\/cms\/download\/dflqv\/jb2016_taetigkeitsbericht.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">annual report for 2015<\/a> and 11 articles with the main focus on Nazi persecution and resistance in the \u201cReichsgaue\u201d Greater Vienna (\u201cGro\u00df-Wien\u201d) and Lower Austria which the Nazis called\u00a0\u201cNiederdonau\u201d (to avoid the tabooed term Austria\/\u00d6sterreich).<\/p>\n<p>Examples for Nazi fanatism are described in three essays:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cSixteen Poles at once\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>The contribution of the teacher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doew.at\/cms\/download\/c1lu\/jb2016_riha.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rudolf Riha<\/a> tries to clarify rumors about war crimes committed by an Austrian police man, member of the 11<sup>th<\/sup> SS-\u00adTotenkopfstandarte displaced in the Radom district of the General Government, who, after 1945, became mayor of a village in Lower Austria. During the last years the municipal council of the village refused all attempts to rename a street which was named after this mayor.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>From \u201cAktion T4\u201d to the so called \u201cdecentralized euthanasia\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>The psychiatric hospitals Gugging, Mauer-\u00d6hling and Ybbs in Lower Austria were among the main sites of euthanasia murders after the Aktion T4 had been stopped by Hitler in summer 1941. The principal perpetrator on all these crime scenes was Emil Gelny, one of the \u201cmost evil figures of Austrian medical history\u201d, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doew.at\/cms\/download\/ddlje\/jb2016_czech.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Herwig Czech<\/a> calls him. Czech evaluates both medical records of the hospitals during the Nazi era and post-1945 court documents. He depicts Gelny as an example for a Nazi fanatic who exceeded even the requirements of the euthanasia murder program.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The \u201cStein Complex\u201d<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nThe young historian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doew.at\/cms\/download\/cdhju\/jb2016_garscha_ferihumer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Konstantin Ferihumer<\/a> and D\u00d6W archivist Winfried Garscha describe the biggest massacre on Austrian soil in 1945, the mass shooting of more than 300 already released prisoners of the penitentiary Stein on the Danube on April 6<sup>th<\/sup>. The authors argue that the massacre was part and parcel of a whole complex of crimes of the final phase of the Nazi regime in the area Krems on the Danube. Krems and Stein had become headquarters of some of the crucial Nazi state apparatuses like the Gestapo or the general prosecutor after the liberation of Vienna by the Soviet army.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doew.at\/cms\/download\/3cdke\/jb2016_kuretsidis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Claudia Kuretsidis-Haider<\/a> presents her expert opinion about the possiblde revocation of the honorary citizenship for the former\u00a0and deputy mayor of the Lower Austrian town of Amstetten. She describes the involvement of this \u201cLandrat\u201d (district administrator during the Nazi era) in the persecution of Jews, \u201cgypsies\u201d and slave laborers, and his career after the war:<br \/>\n<em><strong>\u201cMetes and Bounds of Obedience, Administrative Jurisdiction and Local Networks of a District Administrator During and After World War II\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doew.at\/cms\/download\/7ctme\/jb2016_roth.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephan Roth<\/a> tells the moving story of a local resistance group in the \u201cDunkelstein Woods\u201d in Central Lower Austria: <em><strong>\u201c&#8230;because I will be shot dead today afternoon at five.\u201d<\/strong> <\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doew.at\/cms\/download\/6cpmu\/jb2016_schafranek.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hans Schafranek<\/a> shows the startling extent of the infiltration of different resistance organizations in Lower Austria by the Gestapo office in Sankt P\u00f6lten, especially in the final phase of the war.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0 November 2016 the D\u00d6W was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austrianresistance.org\/?p=79\">awarded <\/a>by the governer of Lower Austria for this book.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All contributions are in German.
