GSA Panel: “Competing Narratives of Victimhood and Responsibility in Austria”

From September 24 to 27, 2026, the German Studies Association will hold its 50th anniversary conference in Phoenix, Arizona (USA). The Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance (DÖW) and the American Friends of DÖW are organizing a panel on the Austrian victimhood narrative, responsibility for Nazi crimes, and other aspects of the culture of remembrance.

Winfried R. Garscha will speak about the writings of former SA leader Alfred Persche in post-war Austria. Other speakers include Gerald Steinacher (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) and Felix Tweraser (University of West Georgia), with commentary by Lisa Silverman (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and moderation by Joseph Moser (West Chester University).
